Finding stillness in everyday life

How often do we mindlessly scroll our phones in every free moment we’ve got? A recent trip back to Hong Kong brought to the forefront of my attention how our society has become digitally intoxicated with constant noise, news and notifications.

Everywhere I went I saw people of all ages glued to their phones, middle-aged Aunties watching Youtube videos while walking, youngsters sending voice messages on the go and so on and so forth. With the perspectives I’ve gained from my mindfulness practice over the past years, I began to observe, and notice, instead of being wrapped up in the busyness and noise around me.

“Being still does not mean don’t move. It means move in peace.”
E’yen A. Gardner

It’s even harder when people around you are striding at an unnecessarily anxious and quick pace, trying to get somewhere as quickly as possible, and doing things as if slowing down would lead to dire consequences. I’ve noticed it even more this time, seeing how my dad jumps into his next action before giving this moment a full chance to sink in.

I constantly asked myself, do I want to live like this? What is the point of reaching the destination if I didn’t enjoy the journey at all? It was saddening yet…
